Black Doves Season 2: Release Time, Cast, Reviews and Whether Season 3 Is Happening

Quick answer: Black Doves Season 2 is out now on Netflix. All six hour-long episodes came out at once on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at about 3 a.m. ET (midnight PT). Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw return as spy Helen Webb and hitman Sam Young. Ambika Mod, Neve Campbell and Sam Riley join the cast. Early reviews are mostly glowing. Netflix hasn’t officially renewed the show for Season 3, but creator Joe Barton says a writers’ room is already working on it.

Almost two years after the first season reached No. 1 on Netflix in December 2024, the darkly funny British spy thriller is back. Here’s everything you need to know before you start: the release time, who’s in the cast, what the new season is about, what critics are saying and whether more is coming.

When did Black Doves Season 2 come out?

Season 2 premiered on Netflix on Thursday, November 5, 2026. As with Season 1, Netflix released every episode on the same day. According to Variety, there are six episodes, each about an hour long. TVLine’s schedule listed the drop at 3 a.m. ET, which is 8 a.m. in the UK and 4 p.m. in Beijing and Manila.

Six hours makes for a manageable weekend binge. If you’re still deciding whether to binge a whole season or pace yourself, this is one of the few recent Netflix dramas that critics say rewards the all-at-once approach. The show is rated TV-MA for its violence and language.

What is Black Doves Season 2 about?

The first season, which premiered on December 5, 2024, introduced Helen Webb. She looks like a polished political wife and mother, but she’s secretly a spy for the Black Doves, a mercenary organization that sells secrets to the highest bidder. When her lover is assassinated, she turns to her old friend Sam, a hitman with troubles of his own.

Netflix’s official synopsis picks up after “the misadventures of last Christmas.” Helen is still betraying her country’s secrets, and now her husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan), is preparing to become prime minister. When her handler, Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire), is caught up in “a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves,” Helen teams up with Sam again. Sam is now down to “lonely drinks in Soho bars and low-rate hits.”

Reviews, which stay spoiler-light, add a little more detail. RogerEbert.com says Reed brings Helen new information and then disappears. A job goes wrong for Sam, and he ends up working for a mysterious figure played by Sam Riley. The Independent notes that Sam’s new targets are all former Black Doves, which is a serious taboo in this world.

Creator Joe Barton told Netflix’s Tudum that this season digs further into the organization itself: “It was really fun in this series to dig into the [Black Doves] organization more than we did in the first series and actually see a bit of how it works behind the scenes, and then blow it all up slightly.”

What are critics saying?

Early reviews are largely positive, and most of the praise goes to the friendship between Knightley and Whishaw:

  • RogerEbert.com (Brian Tallerico) headlined its review “Season 2 Proves That ‘Black Doves’ Might Be Netflix’s Best Show.” It called the new season “just as good as the first” and praised “some of the most breakneck plotting of any show on any network.”
  • The Independent (Jessie Thompson) called it “the show most worthy of your Netflix subscription” and “even more of a delicious binge watch than the first time.” Thompson added that it’s “the best thing Knightley has done in years.”
  • Tom’s Guide called it the answer to its “Slow Horses” withdrawal: “a thoroughly entertaining return” that “occasionally gets tangled in its own web of secrets.”
  • The Guardian‘s headline says Whishaw, Knightley and Lancashire are “spine-tinglingly good.”
  • Screen Rant was cooler. It argued that the season “loses depth as it aims for James Bond and John Wick” and can’t match the first season, but it still called the show thrilling, funny and emotional.

The comparisons to Apple TV’s Slow Horses come up again and again, and they help explain why the show travels so well. Its London setting and very British humor haven’t stopped it from finding a global audience, which reflects a wider trend of local stories becoming worldwide streaming hits.

Netflix’s launch: 800 drones over the Thames

Netflix promoted the premiere with a big stunt. According to Tudum, the streamer flew 800 drones above the River Thames on November 2, filling the London skyline with images and messages from the new season. Netflix calls it the largest drone show ever staged over the river, and the cast and creative team watched from Woods Quay. Big launches like this are part of how streamers try to make a flagship show stand out as viewers rethink how many services they pay for. We covered that in our piece on streaming subscription fatigue.

Will there be a Black Doves Season 3?

Not officially, at least not yet. As of November 4, Netflix hadn’t announced a renewal, Just Jared reported. On the Pilot TV podcast, Barton said, “It’s an ongoing conversation. There’s a writers room. Netflix are really behind it.” He added that Netflix has told him it would love to recommission the show and that “everyone’s at the whims of market forces.”

Barton has a wish list too. At the launch event, he told Esquire UK that his dream guest stars for a third season would be Tom Hanks and Elliot Page. Netflix usually waits to see how a show performs in its first weeks before deciding on renewal, so viewing numbers for Season 2 will likely decide the show’s future.

FAQ

Yes. Black Doves is a Netflix original series and streams on Netflix worldwide.
