My Chemical Romance’s ‘The Black Parade’ Hits No. 1 After 20 Years: How It Happened and What’s Next

Yes, it really happened: My Chemical Romance finally has a No. 1 album in the U.S., and it’s one they released two decades ago. The 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of The Black Parade jumped from No. 139 to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart dated Nov. 7, 2026, Billboard announced on Sunday, Nov. 1. It’s the band’s first chart-topper ever, and the 20-year wait is the longest any album has needed to reach the top.

Here’s how a 2006 rock opera beat this year’s new releases, what is actually on the reissue, and what the band says comes next.

The Numbers Behind the No. 1

According to Billboard, citing Luminate data, The Black Parade earned 78,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 29, up 653% from the week before. Most of that came from people actually buying the record:

  • 68,000 pure album sales, up 2,082%
  • 42,000 of those sales were vinyl, the band’s best vinyl week ever
  • 10,000 streaming-equivalent units, which works out to about 10.14 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs

The reissue came out in more than 20 physical variants across vinyl, CD and cassette, including signed editions. Billboard combines every version of an album when it counts sales, so all those collector’s editions added up to one big number.

A record-breaking wait

When The Black Parade first came out on Oct. 23, 2006, it debuted at No. 2. As the Associated Press notes, it was held off the top by Disney’s Hannah Montana soundtrack. That No. 2 stayed the band’s best chart showing until this week.

Billboard says the 20-year gap between the album’s release and its first week at No. 1 is the longest ever. The previous record was the roughly 15-year, nine-month wait for Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits, which hit No. 1 after his death in 2024. The 139-to-1 leap is also the biggest jump to No. 1 since Taylor Swift’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version) climbed 157-1 in October 2021.

My Chemical Romance first showed up on the Billboard 200 with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge on the June 26, 2004-dated chart, so it took the band 22 years and four months to get a No. 1. They are the third act in 2026 to wait at least 10 years for a first chart-topper, after Megadeth in February and Jhené Aiko in September.

What’s on the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition?

The Black Parade (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) came out Oct. 23, 2026 through Reprise Records. It has the full original album plus six bonus tracks, according to Billboard:

  • Three fan-favorite B-sides: “Heaven Help Us,” “Kill All Your Friends” and “My Way Home Is Through You”
  • Three live tracks recorded on the band’s 2007 tour: “Dead!,” “The Sharpest Lives” and “Someone Out There Loves You”

In a statement released with the reissue, the band said: “For the first time, we have included everything we finished during those sessions in a single collection.”

The vinyl numbers fit a bigger trend. Collectors keep paying for physical editions, and multiple variants have become a standard way for artists to boost first-week sales. If you want the background, see our look at the resurgence of vinyl records.

The Olivia Rodrigo Twist

The race for No. 1 was close. Rolling Stone reports that The Black Parade beat Olivia Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and midweek projections had My Chemical Romance ahead by only about a thousand sales. Rodrigo didn’t treat it as a rivalry. She cheered the band on with an Instagram story showing a clip from their Citi Field show in New York, which she attended earlier this year and where she met the band backstage.

The band’s reaction was perfectly on brand. They reshared Billboard’s announcement on Instagram Stories, set to Miley Cyrus’s 2013 hit “Wrecking Ball,” with eight black hearts. Rolling Stone points out that the song choice could be a callback to the Hannah Montana album that kept them at No. 2 in 2006.

Why The Black Parade Still Hits

The Black Parade is a concept album about a dying character called The Patient. It took My Chemical Romance from the emo scene to the mainstream. It produced the band’s biggest Hot 100 hit, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” which peaked at No. 9 in January 2007 and spent seven weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. “Teenagers,” another single from the album, is still a staple at concerts and on social media.

The reissue also arrived in the middle of a huge victory lap. The band’s Long Live The Black Parade tour, where they play the album from start to finish, started in Seattle on July 11, 2025. It has since played stadiums across North America, Latin America and Europe, including several nights at London’s Wembley Stadium. Variety notes that the band marked the anniversary with five nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Add nostalgia for the 2000s, a fan base that grew up with the album and younger listeners finding it on streaming, and you get a chart run that nobody would have predicted in 2006. (We’ve written before about how nostalgia drives entertainment and how fan communities shape trends, and this is a textbook example of both.)

A new album in 2027 and a break from the stage

The bigger news for fans came at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 30. Frontman Gerard Way told the crowd that the band plans to make a new record next year, NME reported. “So yeah, next year, we wanna go make a record,” he said, adding, “Hopefully we’ll see you guys in 2028.” Loudwire reported that he was also clear about live shows: “We’re probably not doing any shows.”

That would be the band’s first new studio album since 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. No title or release date has been announced.
